Otto Knoch

Otto Bernhard Knoch (born January 7, 1926 in Sindelfingen ; † November 17, 1993 in Beutelsbach ) was a German Catholic theologian , clergyman and exegete .

Life

Otto Knoch was born in Württemberg , the son of Franz Anton Knoch and Hedwig Speer . After his involvement in Catholic youth work, he was drafted into the Wehrmacht in 1944. After being wounded in the Ruhr area shortly before the end of World War II , he was captured by the United States as a prisoner of war . There he decided to study Catholic theology and philosophy , which he began in Tübingen in 1946 .

In 1951 he was ordained a priest and worked in the Rottenburg diocese . After working as vicar in Ludwigsburg and Schwenningen as well as repetition at the Wilhelmsstift in Tübingen, he received his doctorate in 1959 with a doctoral thesis on the eschatological conception of the first Clement's letter . He then worked until 1972 as director of the Catholic Bible Works in Stuttgart .

Since 1968 he had a teaching position at the University of Tübingen and then became an associate professor and, in 1974, a full professor at the Philosophical-Theological University of Passau for introductory biblical studies and biblical kerygmatics .

In 1969 he became vice chairman of the Executive Committee of the World Federation for the Biblical Apostolate . From 1969 to 1976 he was secretary of the sub-commission for biblical questions at the German Bishops' Conference and from 1976 biblical advisor to the German Liturgical Commission.

Act

In addition to his work as a pastor, Otto Knoch worked primarily as a scientific exegete . He was the author and editor of innumerable articles and books on Bible texts, some of which have also been translated into other languages. He played a key role in the uniform German translation of the Bible.

It was particularly important to him to apply the scientific results of his research in practice, which he conveyed in a variety of ways as a pastor and teacher.
