Dominikus Schwaderlapp
Dominikus Schwaderlapp (first name Dominik ; born May 4, 1967 in Selters , Westerwald ) is cathedral chapter and auxiliary bishop in the Archdiocese of Cologne . In his previous position as Vicar General of the Archdiocese, he was considered the right-hand man of Joachim Cardinal Meisner .
Life
Schwaderlapp grew up in Ransbach-Baumbach . After studying Catholic theology in Bonn and Augsburg , Schwaderlapp received the sacrament of ordination on June 18, 1993 from Archbishop Joachim Cardinal Meisner in Cologne . On June 20, 1993, he celebrated his in his home parish of St. Anthony in Ransbach-Baumbach first Mass . Then he was chaplain in St. Marien and St. Barbara in Neuss and since November 15, 1996 archbishop chaplain and secret secretary.
He received his doctorate in theology in 2002 with a work on moral theology under Joachim Piegsa at the University of Augsburg . Until the end of 2003 he was Archbishop's chaplain and secretary to Meisner. On January 1, 2004 he was appointed Deputy Vicar General in Cologne. From June 1, 2004 to mid-March 2012, Schwaderlapp was Vicar General of the Archdiocese of Cologne and thus head of administration of the largest diocese in Germany. On July 2, 2004 he was elected resident cathedral chapter . After he was introduced as Canon on July 25, 2004 , Pope John Paul II awarded him the title of Honorary Prelate of His Holiness on November 17, 2004 . In 2009, the cathedral chapter of appointed him Swidnica (Schweidnitz) for Ehrendomherrn .
On February 24, 2012, Pope Benedict XVI appointed him . as titular bishop of Frequentium and auxiliary bishop in the Archdiocese of Cologne. He is responsible for the “North Pastoral District ” with the cities of Düsseldorf , Wuppertal , Solingen and Remscheid as well as for the Rhein-Kreis Neuss , Mettmann and Oberbergischer Kreis . The episcopal consecration was donated to him on March 25, 2012 in Cologne Cathedral by Joachim Cardinal Meisner; Co-consecrators were the Cologne auxiliary bishops Manfred Melzer and Heiner Koch . On October 30, 2014 appointed him Rainer Cardinal Woelki the Episcopal Vicar for Education Permanent deacons and Episcopal Vicar for Vocations and Spiritual Communities . Since April 1st, 2018 he has been Episcopal Vicar for the Orders and International Pastoral Care in the Archdiocese of Cologne. In the German Bishops' Conference he is a member of the Journalism Commission and the Commission on Marriage and Family .
Opus Dei
Schwaderlapp is close to the Catholic lay organization Opus Dei . Schwaderlapp told the press that he appreciated the theology of the organization and took part in retreats . He also stated that his spiritual guide belongs to Opus Dei and that he also knows the organization from his family environment. He himself has known the organization since his youth, but is not a member.
Official acts as vicar general
In 2006, as Vicar General, Schwaderlapp was responsible for the conception and implementation of the “Future Today” reform program.
In 2010, Schwaderlapp, as Cologne Vicar General, protested against the decision of the court president of the Düsseldorf Higher Regional Court not to install a crucifix in a new judicial building , with the words: "Whoever removes the crosses from our courtrooms demonstratively separates our legal system from its roots". Human dignity is “not a concession by the state”, but a gift from God.
As vicar general, Schwaderlapp assured a man who was known as a “ life protector ” and author of the Catholic-traditionalist website kreuz.net , in writing, that for hospitals that are sponsored by the Diocesan Charity Association for the Archdiocese of Cologne eV, a “zero Tolerance limit ” applies to abortions . Schwaderlapp also described the cooperation of the clinics with emergency clinics, which, among other things, prescribed the so-called “ morning-after pill ” as a nuisance that should be eliminated. The emergency clinics are operated by the Association of Statutory Health Insurance Physicians , but are located on the premises of the clinics under Catholic ownership.
Two months later, with reference to the ethical guidelines of the Archdiocese of Cologne, doctors refused treatment to an allegedly raped woman in two clinics because, according to the press, they feared coming into conflict with their employer. Because the doctors refused, there was no explanation about the morning-after pill. The incident was also seen in the press as a response to a letter from Schwaderlapp to the clinics.
Positions
Ecumenism
Regarding the decision of the Evangelical Church in the Rhineland in 2016 to marry same-sex couples , Schwaderlapp said that this made ecumenism more difficult. He sees the decision "with a certain sadness".
Marriage for everyone
Before the vote in the German Bundestag in 2017, Schwaderlapp publicly spoke out against the introduction of the state “ marriage for everyone ” and the possibility of divorce from a church marriage in the newspaper Rheinische Post . Marriage is “a symbol of God's love for people” and is “unbreakable”. Marriage is unique and should not be “misunderstood as a seal of approval for the quality of a partnership”. The "marriage for all" is "therefore a contradiction in terms". Schwaderlapp went beyond the position of the German Bishops' Conference with his statement and spoke of a "tactical election maneuver" before the introduction and saw "a lack of respect for democratic processes". He further criticized the fact that the Bundestag's approach "lacks any respect for the special protection of Article 6 anchored in the Basic Law ".
Synodal way
In May 2020 Schwaderlapp withdrew as a participant in the Synodal Path of the Roman Catholic Church from the forum “Living in Successful Relationships” because of a “massive dissent in terms of content”. Schwaderlapp gave the reason that the line followed by the majority there aimed at changing church sexual morality. This way is not his way. In this context, the time characterized Schwaderlapp as "one of the most important Woelki followers". According to Christ und Welt, "Schwaderlapp is said to have declared in the sessions of the forum that he could no longer be bishop of the Catholic Church if the largely liberal food for thought prevailed in matters of sexual morality."
According to Schwaderlapp, it is impossible to separate “fertility and love” because this is the “Magisterium of the Church”. In a draft of a resolution text of the forum, which was to be presented to the synodal assembly, it was said, "Sexuality integrates various values: not only fertility and love, but also, for example, lust and identity." Schwaderlapp denied the equality of these levels and criticized the lack of them a ranking of these categories.
Schwaderlapp stated:
“The introduction of this thesis is not without reason. In this way, contraceptive measures can be justified as well as fertility-free sexual practices such as homosexual acts or masturbation. And last but not least, artificial insemination can be justified with it. Ultimately, it is also intended to reassess the situation of divorced remarried people. And that is exactly the intention of introducing this thesis. "
Abortions
In 2016 Schwaderlapp took part in the March for Life in Berlin. Schwaderlapp describes abortions in a greeting to the march as "a double act of violence". On the one hand, they "violently destroy the life of a small child", on the other hand they are an "act of violence against the mother". Schwaderlapp thinks mothers are being driven to abortions "by others, perhaps also by panic, at least not by their hearts".
Coat of arms and motto
Description of the coat of arms : In a split shield heraldically on the right a black standing cross in silver (after the coat of arms of the Archdiocese of Cologne), on the left in silver three red sloping bars, covered with a blue jug (after the coat of arms of the city of Ransbach-Baumbach in the Westerwald).
The motto Gaudentes patientes instantes ("[Be] happy, patient, persistent") comes from Romans ( Rom 12.12 EU ).
