history

prehistory

Since the Middle Ages there has been a sick and leper house north of the Rhine Gate with a chapel, which was consecrated to St. Barbara as the patroness of the sick and dying. The leper house was abandoned and demolished in 1712. The chapel existed until the end of the 18th century.

History of the community

For the first eight years, the St. Barbara parish had to make do with an emergency church. But through a donation in 1932 the emergency church was sold to the community of Seven-Pain-Mariens (Holzbüttgen) and construction of today's church began. The current tower was added to the brick building in 1957. The belfry was only completed in 1961 and since then has housed three bells, the sound of which was adapted to the ringing of the neighboring churches ( St. Marien and St. Quirin ). The church has been a listed building since January 16, 1996, as it is significant for the architectural history of Catholic church construction in the 1930s. With its block-like design and the westwork-like portal structure, it stands in the tradition of a type of church built by the important church builder Dominikus Böhm . In Neuss , besides the Dreikönigenkirche built in 1911 , it is the only church that was built between the World Wars and survived the Second World War largely unscathed. In 2005 the parish had to give up its parish home, which is now used by Caritas. In 2006 the Catholic day care center belonging to the parish was closed. The high proportion of foreigners in the community (35.9%) is a particular challenge for pastoral care.

Canon Law History

The Church of St. Barbara was consecrated on July 13, 1933 by Auxiliary Bishop Joseph Hammels and thus rectorate parish of the parish of St. Marien , to which the new parish had been assigned up to then. It retained its status as a rectorate parish until 1952, when it became an independent parish . However, 41 years later, with the departure of the last pastor, she no longer had her own pastor. The pastor of the Marienpfarre also took on this task. On January 1, 2004, the parish of St. Barbara was reassigned to the parish of St. Marien . Without its own pastor, it has since been a branch church and is now part of the pastoral care area in Neuss-Mitte.

Construction / equipment

St. Barbara is a three-aisled church with a central nave, two narrow and low aisles and a recessed choir. It was built according to plans by Hermann Schagen (Düsseldorf). The exterior of the church is dominated by the sintered brick and is typical of the beginning of the 20th century. Noticeably large sgraffito above the entrance portal, which shows St. Barbara . The interior is simply designed and mainly white so as not to distract from the essential, Jesus Christ. The separated choir is rounded off by a fresco by Peter Hecker. The nine-storey tower, which was designed later by the architect Walter Dickmann, is 31 m high and is an identification feature for the entire Barbaraviertel.

window

The 46 stained glass windows were installed in two stages. In 1946, seven windows by Peter Hecker were installed in the Marienkapelle and under the organ gallery. The remaining stained glass windows were only created by Paul Weigmann in 1957 when the tower was being built . In the meantime, Paul Weigmann's windows in particular on the west and north sides are so badly damaged that the parish is collecting donations for renovation.
