Origin, meaning, day of remembrance
The name Lucia is derived from the Latin word lux ("light") and therefore means "the shining one", "the light". Before the introduction of the Gregorian calendar in the 16th century, the winter solstice fell on December 13th, which is the feast day of St. Lucia in the liturgy of the Catholic Church and Orthodox Churches . On December 13th, the “return of light” in the cycle of the seasons was celebrated. In Scandinavia, the Lucia Festival is celebrated particularly solemnly.
