Luzia von Wyl (* 1985 in Lucerne ) is a Swiss jazz pianist and composer as well as a band leader. It is attributed to the jazz style of the Third Stream , which brings together jazz and new music.

Live and act

Wyl grew up in Lucerne, where she also obtained her Matura in 2004 . She then studied piano and composition at the jazz department of the Bern University of the Arts , at the Zurich University of the Arts and at the Lucerne University of the Arts, and graduated in 2011 with a master's degree in piano and a master's in composition . Her teachers were Dieter Ammann , Florian Hoelscher, Kaspar Ewald and others. From 2012 to 2014, Wyl also completed an Executive Master in Arts Administration at the University of Zurich .

With her 10-piece band, the Luzia von Wyl Ensemble with strings, woodwind instruments and a rhythm section , von Wyl regularly presents her compositions. At the same time she writes commissioned works for various musicians and bands, so u. a. for the quartets Melanoia and Quatuor IXI , for the Chamber Soloists Luzern , for the cellist Karolina Öhman, for the oboist Marita Kohler and others; her compositions were premiered in London, New York, Berlin, Vienna, Budapest, Prague, Dubai, Luxemburg, Stans, Lucerne, Bern and Zurich.

Wyl has been a guest at well-known festivals such as the Lucerne Festival , the Schaffhausen Jazz Festival , the BeJazz Winter Festival, the Bern Jazz Workshop and the Swiss Days Dubai.

In 2014 she released her debut album Frost with the Luzia von Wyl Ensemble on the jazz label HatHut Records , which was praised by the national and international specialist press.

From 2009 to 2016, von Wyl taught piano at the Musegg Cantonal School in Lucerne, where she has also headed the instrumental department there since 2013. In 2016 she lived in New York.

Prizes and awards

Wyl is the winner of the 2011 international composition competition of the New York contemporary ensemble Orchestra of Our Time . In 2017 she won the international composition competition of the Chicago Ensemble (2017).
