Lúcia Nagib

Lúcia Nagib (* 1956 ) is a Brazilian film scholar . Her research focus is on a polycentric approach to world cinema . She also looks at “New Wave” and “New Cinema” movements, cinematic realism and intermediality .

Life

Nagib studied film studies at the Universidade de São Paulo and received a Mestrado em Artes there in 1989 . In 1994 she did her doctorate there on the Japanese film director Nagisa Ōshima .

She taught as the Centenary Professor of World Cinemas at the University of Leeds . In April 2013 she was appointed professor in the Department of Film, Theater and Television at the University of Reading . As such, she is director of the Center for Film Aesthetics and Cultures .

In 2000 she was a Ministry of Culture Visiting Fellow at the Center for Brazilian Studies at the University of Oxford . From 2003 to 2004 she was a Leverhulme Trust Visiting Professor at the School of History of Art, Film and Visual Media of Birkbeck College of the University of London . In 2008 she was a Distinguished Visitor at the Department of English and Film Studies at the University of Alberta .

Nagib is the editor of the book series World Cinema Series of the publisher IB Tauris . She is also co-editor there, together with Tiago de Luca, of the Film Thinks Series book series .

She is a member of the European Network for Cinema and Media Studies , the Society for Cinema and Media Studies , and the Association of British and Irish Lusitanists .

Nagib is married to the British prehistorian Stephen Shennan .
