The National University of Campinas ( Portuguese Universidade Estadual de Campinas , abbreviated UNICAMP , also Unicamp) is one of the state universities of the state of São Paulo , Brazil . The main campus is located in Barão Geraldo , a district of Campinas, 10 km from the city center. The unicamp also has other facilities in the cities of Limeira , Piracicaba , Sumaré and Paulínia .

Physicist Marcelo Knobel has been Rector of UNICAMP since April 19, 2017, replacing his predecessor José Tadeu Jorge.

The unicamp was founded on October 5th, 1966 and in 2007 had around 39,300 students and 2,125 professors.

It is one of the best and most productive research and educational institutions in Latin America. The university alone is responsible for 15% of the entire Brazilian research output.

In addition, the Unicamp maintains two vocational technical secondary schools: COTUCA in Campinas and COTIL in Limeira.

The University Hospital of the Unicamp, the Hospital das Clínicas, is the largest state hospital in the region. The unicamp also houses more than 20 interdisciplinary centers, laboratories and research groups.
