The Universidade Federal do Paraná (UFPR) is a Brazilian state university based in Curitiba .
The university was founded on December 19, 1912 as Universidade do Paraná . It is the oldest university in Brazil and is a landmark of the city of Curitiba.
The centrally located historical main building was built in the 1950s. The UFPR today consists of eleven faculties, including the Faculdade de Filosofia, Ciências e Letras, which emerged in 1973 from the Faculty of Humanities and Art (Setor de Ciências Humanas, Letras e Artes). One of the ten institutes of this faculty located in the center of Curitiba is the Institute for Modern Foreign Languages (Departamento de Letras Estrangeiras Modernas, DELEM), which, in addition to English, French, Spanish and other languages, also offers the German Studies course (Letras Alemão) with a focus on linguistics and literature and offers translation.
The language center (Centro de Línguas e Interculturalidade, CELIN) of the humanities faculty has existed since 1995, which offers intercultural offers such as literature , cinema, theater, tandem programs and courses in 22 languages, including Portuguese as a foreign language. The language center also maintains various research projects, including a. in the areas of linguistics and didactics (e.g. textbook development).
