Matinhos is a coastal city in the Brazilian state of Paraná with a population of 29,831 (as of July 1, 2011). The distance to the capital of the state, Curitiba , is 111 kilometers. The distance to the next big city, Paranaguá , is 48 kilometers. Neighboring cities are Guaratuba in the south , Paranaguá in the north and Pontal do Paraná in the northeast .
history
In the 19th century, the area around Matinhos was settled by Portuguese and Italian immigrants. The construction of a road in 1927 increased the population, this time due to immigrants of German origin. Matinhos received city rights on June 12, 1967.
In 1994 the U20 World Junior Championships in chess took place in the seaside resort of Caiobá, which belongs to Matinhos . Junior world champion was Helgi Áss Grétarsson ahead of Zsófia Polgár and Giovanni Vescovi , junior world champion Zhu Chen ahead of Nino Churzidse and Natalia Edsgweradse.
A cable car accident in Matinhos in 1995 claimed two lives, whereupon the cable car to the 262 meter high Morro do Escalvado was shut down.

The city has 36 seaside resorts on 17 kilometers of beaches. In the city center is the natural history museum Museu Ecológico João José Bigarella .
