Zsófia Polgár (also Sofia Polgár ) [ ˈʒoːfiɒ ˈpolɡaːr ] (born November 2, 1974 in Budapest ) is a Hungarian chess player .

Life

She achieved her best tournament result in 1989 at the age of 14 at a tournament in Rome, which she won with 8.5 points from 9 games in front of several grandmasters .

In 1986 she was second in the U14 youth world championship behind Joël Lautier in San Juan and won the girls' championship, at the 1994 junior world championship in Matinhos she also finished second behind Helgi Áss Grétarsson .

In 1990 she received the title of International Master (IM) from FIDE . In 1988 she received the title of International Women's Champion (WIM), and since 1989 she has also had the title of Women's Grand Master (WGM).

On February 7, 1999, she married the Israeli chess grandmaster Yona Kosashvili and followed him to Israel . The couple have two sons.

Zsófia Polgár has not played a rated game since the Israeli team championship in 2010 and is therefore listed as inactive.

National team

Zsófia Polgár participated with the Hungarian women's team in the 1988 , 1990 , 1994 and 1996 Chess Olympiads . She won with the team in 1988 and 1990 and reached second place in 1994, in the individual ranking she achieved the best individual result on the third board in 1990 and on the second board in 1994 (she also achieved the best overall performance of all participants in 1994) and the third-best individual result on the first board in 1996 Board.

societies

Zsófia Polgár used to play for MTK Budapest FC , with whom she took part in the 1990 European Club Cup . In the 2008/09 season she had a job with the Hungarian team champion Aquaprofit NTSK. In the Dutch Meester class she played for the Hilversums Schaakgenootschap until 2003.

Private

Polgár has two sisters, Zsuzsa Polgár and Judit Polgár, who is considered the world's best female chess player . Her father, László Polgár , is a well-known Hungarian educator and the chess trainer of the three sisters.
