The Universidade Federal do Pará (abbreviated UFPA ; in German : Federal University of Pará ) is one of the four federal universities in the state of Pará , Brazil . It was founded on July 2, 1957, the main campus is in Belém . The UFPA maintains eleven other campuses in the cities: Abaetetuba , Altamira , Ananindeua , Bragança , Breves , Cametá , Capanema , Castanhal , Salinópolis , Soure and Tucuruí (as of 2016).

Over 64,000 students were enrolled at UFPA in 2018. Rector was Emmanuel Zagury Tourinho, a behavioral scientist and doctor of philosophy, from 2016 until 2020 . Tourinho was re-elected by the staff and students in June 2020. The election is officially known as a "poll"; the appointment is in the hands of the Brazilian President, who is not bound by the results of the survey and chooses the Rector from a list of three candidates proposed by the highest university body.

Research focuses on areas such as genetics , geosciences and neurosciences .
