Abaetetuba , officially Portuguese Município de Abaetetuba , is a city in the Brazilian state of Pará . It is a port on the right bank of the Baía de Marajó and is located 60 km southwest of Belém .
In the 2010 census year it had 141,100 inhabitants, which on July 1, 2019 were estimated at 156,292 people who live in a community area of around 1610.7 km² and are called Abaetetubenser. The calculated population density is 88 people per km², but over 58% of the population is concentrated in the urban area. It ranks seventh out of 144 municipalities in the state.
The Universidade Federal do Pará (UFPA) has a campus in Abaetetuba.
Toponym
"Abaetetuba" comes from the Tupí-Guaraní languages and means "group of true men".
history
In 1724 the first settlement was built on a protected area on Sirituba Island. In the 18th and 19th centuries it was subordinate to the capital Belém and was initially called Abaeté. By law no. 973 of March 23, 1880, the municipality was given town rights and was spun off from Belém. It received its current place name on December 30, 1943 to distinguish it from a place of the same name in Minas Gerais .

Surrounding communities are Barcarena , Igarapé-Miri (Igarapé-Mirim) and Moju . About 72 islands are located within the municipal area.
The biome is Amazonian rainforest ( Amazônia ) with alluvial forests .

The community has a tropical climate with a lot of precipitation, Am according to the Köppen and Geiger climate classification . The average temperature is 27.0 ° C. The average rainfall is 2577 mm per year.

Local government
The executive rests with the city prefect (mayor). In the local elections in 2016 , Alcides Eufrásio da Conceição Negrão des MDB (formerly PMDB) was elected City Prefect for the 2017-2020 term.
The legislature rests with a 16-member elected city council, the vereadores of the Câmara Municipal.

The monthly average income in 2017 was a factor of 1.9 of the Brazilian minimum wage ( Salário mínimo ) of R $ 880.00 (income converted for 2019: around 378 € per month). The human development index (HDI) is classified as average at 0.628 for 2010.
In 2017, 11,075 people or 7.2% of the population were registered as permanently employed; 52.6% of the population had an income of half the minimum wage in 2010. More than 34,200 families received support from the Bolsa Família social program in October 2019 .
