Lucille Bremer (born February 21, 1917 in Amsterdam , New York , † April 16, 1996 in La Jolla , California ) was an American actress .

Life

Lucille Bremer began her career as a dancer at Radio City Music Hall in New York City when she was only 16 years old. A talent scout brought her to Hollywood and the first film tests convinced MGM boss Louis B. Mayer to give her a contract. The first roles, however, were a long time coming. Arthur Freed suggested her in 1944 for the role of Judy Garland's older sister in Meet Me in St. Louis . She received good reviews for this role. MGM then wanted to make her a star with the musical Yolanda and the Thief (1945). However, her appearance alongside Fred Astaire was considered pale by many critics, and the film was a failure at the box office. MGM then largely dropped her, her other films were mostly B-movies . Bremer did not play her first major dramatic role outside of a musical until 1948: Directed by Budd Boetticher in Behind Closed Doors . However, this film was also her last.

Disappointed with her career, Bremer married in 1948 and did not renew her contract with MGM. She retired into private life and became the mother of four children. After their divorce in 1963, Bremer opened a successful clothing boutique in La Jolla , where she also died of a heart attack in 1996 at the age of 79.
