Geographical location

Most of the urban area extends along the north bank of the Mohawk River . Only the city's harbor, Port Jackson, is on the south bank.

The City of Amsterdam lies within the Town of Amsterdam , but does not belong to it. The neighboring districts of the Town of Amsterdam are Fort Johnson in the west and Hagaman in the northeast.

history

City of Amsterdam has its origins in a settlement called Veedersburgh . Based on the original name of New York City, it was named after Amsterdam , the capital of the Netherlands. In 1830 it was granted city rights.

The I-90 motorway south of the river connects Amsterdam with New York's capital Albany in the southeast (57 km) and Syracuse in the west (185 km).
