Paul David Tonko (born June 18, 1949 in Amsterdam , New York ) is an American engineer and politician of the Democratic Party . He has been a member of the United States House of Representatives for New York State since 2009 .

biography

Paul Tonko was born in Montgomery County , in central New York State . He graduated from Clarkson University , where he graduated with an academic degree . In the meantime he worked in mechanical engineering, among other things. Between 1976 and 1983 he was a member of the Montgomery County County Council. In 1983 he was elected to the New York State Assembly . There he represented the 105th District of New York until June 2007. He then took over the post of President of the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority , a company in the energy industry. He gave up this post at the end of April 2008 to run for a seat in the US House of Representatives.

He was finally elected to the House of Representatives in the 2008 elections to succeed Michael R. McNulty . After four re-elections so far in 2010, 2012, 2014 and 2016, he can continue to exercise his office today. His new legislative term runs until January 3, 2019, with the option of a further candidacy in 2018. Until 2013, he represented the 21st  Congressional District of New York. Since then he has been the representative of the 20th electoral district. Tonko is or was a member of the Committee on Education and Labor and three of its sub-committees. He was previously a member of the Committee on Science and Technology . He is also a member of several caucuses .

Tonko is single and lives in his hometown Amsterdam. He is of the Roman Catholic faith .
