Joseph Mullin (born August 6, 1811 in Dromore , Ireland , † May 17, 1882 in Saratoga Springs , New York ) was an American lawyer and politician . Between 1847 and 1849 he represented New York State in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Joseph Mullin was during the reign of George III. , King of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland , was born in Dromore, County Down . The family immigrated to the United States in 1820 and settled in Watertown , Jefferson County . There he attended public schools. Then he worked in a printing company. Mullin attended Union Academy in Belleville and graduated from Union College in Schenectady in 1833 . He was then a principal at Union Academy and later taught at Watertown Academy . He studied law . He was admitted to the bar in 1837. He was appointed Examiner of Chancery , Supreme Court Commissioner and Commissioner in Bankruptcy in 1841 . As a prosecuting attorney he served between 1843 and 1849 in Jefferson County. Politically, he was a member of the Whig Party .

In the 1846 congressional elections for the 30th Congress , Mullin was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the 19th electoral district of New York , where he succeeded Orville Hungerford on March 4, 1847 . He retired from the after March 3, 1849 Congress of.

Then he was president of the Village of Watertown in 1853 and 1854. In 1856 he became associate justice at the New York Supreme Court - a position he held until 1881. During this time he also held the post of Presiding Justice . He died on May 17, 1882 in Saratoga Springs and was then buried in Brookside Cemetery in Watertown.
