R. Holland duel

Rodolphus Holland Duell (born December 20, 1824 in Warren , New York , † February 11, 1891 in Cortland , New York) was an American lawyer and politician . Between 1859 and 1863 and between 1871 and 1875 he represented New York State in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Rodolphus Holland Duell was born in Herkimer County about ten years after the end of the British-American War . He completed his preliminary studies. Then he studied law . After receiving his license to practice law in 1845, he began practicing in Fabius . He moved to Cortland in 1847. Between 1850 and 1855 he was a district attorney in Cortland County and between 1855 and 1859 a judge there. Politically, he belonged to the Republican Party .

In the congressional elections of 1858 for the 36th Congress Duel in the 21st  constituency of New York was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , where he succeeded Henry Bennett on March 4, 1859 . After a re-election, he retired from after March 3, 1863 Congress of. In the 37th Congress he chaired the Committee on Revolutionary Claims .

After his time in Congress, he went back to his practice as a lawyer in Cortland. He was also between 1869 and 1871 assessor for the tax revenue in the 23rd District of New York.

In 1870 he ran in the 23rd constituency of New York for the 42nd Congress . After a successful election, he succeeded Dennis McCarthy on March 4, 1871 . In the congressional election of 1872 for the 43rd Congress he was elected to the US House of Representatives in the 24th constituency of New York, where he succeeded John E. Seeley on March 4, 1873 . He left the Congress after March 3, 1875. In the 43rd Congress he had the chair the Committee on Expenditures on Public Buildings .

President Ulysses S. Grant appointed him United States Commissioner of Patents on October 1, 1875 - a position he held until January 30, 1877. He then went back to his practice as a lawyer in Cortland, where he died on February 11, 1891. His body was then interred in the Cortland Rural Cemetery .
