William A. Gilbert

William Augustus Gilbert (born January 25, 1815 in Gilead , Connecticut , † May 25, 1875 in Adams , New York ) was an American lawyer and politician . Between 1855 and 1857 he represented New York State in the US House of Representatives .

Career

William Augustus Gilbert was born in Tolland County about a month before the end of the British-American War . The family then moved to Jefferson County and settled in Champion . There he attended public schools. He studied law . After receiving his license to practice bar in 1843, he began practicing in Adams. About three years later the Mexican-American War broke out. He was a member of the New York State Assembly in 1851 and 1852 . Politically, he was a member of the opposition party at that time .

In the congressional election of 1854 for the 34th Congress , Gilbert was elected to the United States House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the 23rd  constituency of New York , where he succeeded Caleb Lyon on March 4, 1855 . However, before the end of his term on February 27, 1857, he resigned from his seat in the US House of Representatives.

After his time in Congress, he was President of the Village of Adams in 1859 and 1860. Gilbert went about banking. He died in Adams about ten years after the end of the Civil War and was then buried in the Rural Cemetery .
