Thomas W. "Tom" Reed II. (* 18th November 1971 in Joliet , Illinois ) is an American politician of the Republican Party . Since 2010 he has been a member of the United States House of Representatives for the 29th and 23rd Congressional Districts of New York State .

biography

Reed was born in Joliet, the youngest of twelve children of an Army officer . He grew up in Corning . His father died when he was two years old; his mother raised the children alone. After graduating from high school in 1989, he went to Alfred University , where he received his bachelor's degree . After studying law at Ohio Northern University and being admitted to the bar in 1996, he began practicing his new profession in 1999 in Corning. Reed was a successful swimmer during his student days. Reed also worked as a lawyer in the real estate industry. He was Mayor of Corning from 2008 to 2010.

In November 2010, Reed was elected to the House of Representatives in a by-election to replace the resigned Eric Massa . He prevailed against the Democrat Matthew Zeller with 56% of the vote . On November 18, Reed took his oath of office. The inauguration was delayed by two days because he had to be hospitalized at George Washington University due to an acute thrombus . Since he has been re-elected in all subsequent elections, he can continue to exercise his mandate today. He was re-elected in 2016 and 2018. Until 2013 he represented the 29th electoral district of his state in the House of Representatives. Since then he has been a representative of the 23rd constituency. Together with his Democratic colleague Josh Gottheimer from New Jersey , Reed founded the Problem Solvers Caucus in 2017 , a working group of MPs from both parties to find non-partisan solutions.

Tom Reed is married and has two children. He is a Roman Catholic and lives in Corning.
