J. Ernest Wharton

James Ernest Wharton (* 23. March 1899 in Binghamton , New York ; † 19th January 1990 in Summit , New York) was an American politician of the Republican Party and member of the US House of Representatives for the State of New York.

Wharton graduated from Union College and Albany Law School . From 1920 to 1929 he worked for Travelers before working as a private lawyer in Richmondville ; from 1932 to 1941 he served as a district attorney in Schoharie County and then until 1951 as a county judge . He served in the United States Army during World War II .

Wharton was elected to Congress in 1950 and remained there from January 3, 1951 to January 3, 1965, after losing his re-election in 1964 to Democrat Joseph Y. Resnick . He then retired from politics and worked in the field of property development.
