Charles William Gillet (born November 26, 1840 in Addison , Steuben County , New York , †  December 31, 1908 in New York City ) was an American politician . Between 1893 and 1905 he represented New York State in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Charles Gillet attended his home public schools and the Delaware Literary Institute in Franklin , Delaware County . Between 1861 and 1863 he served as a soldier in the Union Army during the Civil War . In 1863 he had to quit military service after being wounded. He then made casements, doors and blinds in Addison. Between 1878 and 1886 he was also the post office owner there. Politically, he became a member of the Republican Party .

In the congressional election of 1892 Gillet was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the 29th  constituency of New York , where he succeeded John Raines on March 4, 1893 . After five re-elections, he was able to complete six legislative terms in Congress by March 3, 1905 . During this time the Spanish-American War of 1898 fell . Since 1903 he represented the 33rd district of his state. From 1895 to 1903, Gillet chaired the Department of Agriculture's Expenditure Control Committee; from 1903 to 1905 he headed the Committee on Public Properties.

In 1904, Charles Gillet waived another congressional candidacy. He died on December 31, 1908 in New York City and was buried in his hometown of Addison.
