Henry Colvin Brewster (born September 7, 1845 in Rochester , New York , †  January 29, 1928 in Canandaigua , New York) was an American politician . Between 1895 and 1899 he represented New York State in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Henry Brewster attended public schools in his home country. In 1863 he embarked on an almost lifelong career with Traders' National Bank . Until 1868 he worked there as an administrative clerk ; from 1868 to 1894 he was a cashier. Between 1907 and 1917 he was president of this bank and then chairman of the board until 1923. He served as President of the Rochester Chamber of Commerce in 1893 and 1902. Brewster was also a co-founder of the New York State Bankers' Association . In 1894 he was its vice-president and in 1899 he became president of this association. Politically, he joined the Republican Party . He became vice president of the New York State League of Republican Clubs and president of the Monroe County League . In 1897 he was also vice president of the National League of Republican Clubs .

In the congressional elections of 1894 Brewster was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the 31st  constituency of New York , where he succeeded John Van Voorhis on March 4, 1895 . After re-election, he was able to complete two legislative terms in Congress until March 3, 1899 . During this time the Spanish-American War of 1898 fell . From 1897 Brewster was chairman of the Committee on Alcoholic Liquor Traffic .

In 1898 he renounced another congressional candidacy. After his time in the US House of Representatives, he continued his previous activities until 1923. In June 1900, he took part as a delegate to the Republican National Convention in Philadelphia , on which President William McKinley was nominated for re-election. Henry Brewster retired in 1923. He died on January 29, 1928 while visiting Canandaigua and was buried in Rochester.
