Daniel Newton Lockwood (born June 1, 1844 in Hamburg , New York , †  June 1, 1906 in Buffalo , New York) was an American lawyer and politician . Between 1877 and 1879 and again from 1891 to 1895 he represented the state of New York in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Daniel Lockwood attended public schools in his home country. In 1865 he graduated from Union College in Schenectady . After a subsequent law degree and his admission as a lawyer in 1866, he began to work in this profession in Buffalo. Between 1874 and 1877 he was a district attorney in the local Erie County . Politically, he joined the Democratic Party .

In the congressional elections of 1876 Lockwood was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the 32nd  electoral district of New York , where he succeeded Republican Lyman K. Bass on March 4, 1877 . He was able to complete a legislative period there until March 3, 1879. In the years 1880, 1884 and 1896 Lockwood took part as a delegate to the respective Democratic National Conventions . Between October 1886 and June 1889 he was the successor to Martin I. Townsend federal prosecutor for the northern part of New York state.

In the elections of 1890 Daniel Lockwood was re- elected to Congress in the 32nd district of his state , where he replaced John M. Farquhar on March 4, 1891 . After being re-elected, he was able to complete two further terms in the US House of Representatives until March 3, 1895. In 1894 he renounced another congressional candidacy. Instead, he ran unsuccessfully for the office of lieutenant governor of New York.

After his time in the US House of Representatives, Daniel Lockwood practiced as a lawyer in Buffalo again. In 1901 he was his state manager for the Pan-American Exposition in Buffalo , where President William McKinley was assassinated. Since 1903 he was a member of the State Lunacy Commission . He died on June 1, 1906, his 62nd birthday, in Buffalo, where he was also buried.
