Nelson I. Norton

Nelson Ira Norton (born March 30, 1820 in Cattaraugus County , New York , †  October 28, 1887 in Hinsdale , New York) was an American politician . Between 1875 and 1877 he represented New York State in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Nelson Norton received only a limited education and then worked in agriculture. At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Republican Party . In 1860 and between 1865 and 1867 he was a district councilor in Cattaraugus County. From 1852 to 1870 he served as justice of the peace in his homeland; in 1861 and 1862 he was a member of the New York State Assembly .

After the death of the elected Congressman Augustus F. Allen, who died on January 20, 1875 and thus before the beginning of the legislative period on March 4, Norton was elected as his successor in the by-election for the 33rd seat of New York Elected House of Representatives in Washington, DC , where he took up his new mandate on December 6, 1875. By March 3, 1877, he was able to end the current legislative period in Congress . After serving in the US House of Representatives, Norton returned to farming. He died in Hinsdale on October 28, 1887.
