Lorenzo Burrows (born March 15, 1805 in Groton , Connecticut , †  March 6, 1885 in Albion , New York ) was an American politician . Between 1849 and 1853 he represented New York State in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Lorenzo Burrows was the nephew of Congressman Daniel Burrows (1766-1858). He attended schools in Plainfield and in Westerly ( Rhode Iceland ). In 1824 he moved to Albion, New York State, where he worked as a clerk until 1826. After that he became active in the trade. In 1839 he helped found the Bank of Albion . In the meantime he also worked there as a cashier. In 1840 he became a chamberlain in Orleans County . A year later he was assigned to this district for bankruptcies ( Assignee in Bankruptcy ); In 1845 he officiated as town supervisor in Barre . Politically, he joined the Whig Party .

In the congressional election of 1848 Burrows was elected to the United States House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the 34th  constituency of New York , where he succeeded Washington Hunt on March 4, 1849 . After re-election, he was able to complete two legislative terms in Congress until March 3, 1853 . This time was marked by the discussions about the question of slavery . Among other things, the compromise of 1850 introduced by Senator Henry Clay was passed.

Between 1855 and 1857 Lorenzo Burrows held the position of New York State Comptroller . Then he became director and president of Niagara Falls International Bridge Co. In 1858 he was appointed to the board of directors of the University of New York . In the same year he ran unsuccessfully as a candidate for the American Party for the office of governor of New York. Since 1862 he was also one of the commissioners to look after the Mount Albion Cemetery . He held these two posts until his death on March 6, 1885. He was buried in Mount Albion Cemetery .
