William J. Morgan

William James Morgan (born October 16, 1840 in Peterborough , Ontario , † September 5, 1900 in Albany , New York ) was an American officer , newspaper editor and politician .

Career

William James Morgan came to the United States when he was ten . He attended public schools in Buffalo, New York. When the civil war broke out , he enlisted as a private in the 116th Volunteer Infantry and fought in the siege of Port Hudson and the battle of Cedar Creek . Morgan was wounded several times. In 1864 he retired with the rank of Brevet - Lieutenant Colonels from the volunteers from the army. He then returned to Buffalo, New York. In 1869 he joined the editorial team of The Buffalo Commercial , where he worked for the next 20 years. Of theNew York Governor Alonzo B. Cornell appointed him a canal surveyor in 1880. He later became chairman of the Canal Board. The President Benjamin Harrison appointed him Collector of Customs at the Port of Buffalo. The New York State Comptroller James A. Roberts appointed him Deputy Comptroller in 1894 . In the 1898 election, Morgan was elected New York State Comptroller. He passed away the day he was re-nominated by the Republican State Convention.
