James W. Fleming

James Wheeler Fleming (born February 15, 1867 in Troy , New York , † April 27, 1928 there ) was an American businessman, banker and politician .

Career

James Wheeler Fleming, son of James Fleming, a staff member of U.S. Senator Edward Murphy, Jr. , was born and raised in Rensselaer County in 1867 . The Flemings were in the wholesale of spirits. However, James Wheeler Fleming sold the business after his father's death. He attended Troy Academy and graduated from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. In the following years he was director of the Manufacturers' National Bank of Troy and the Troy Gas Company. He also held the post of Vice President of the Manhattan Navigation Company and the Casualty Company of America.

On June 15, 1911, he was appointed New York State Forest, Fish and Game Commissioner to replace the resigned Thomas Mott Osborne . On July 17, 1911, he was appointed one of the three commissioners in the New York State Conservation Commission . This was the merger of the Forest, Fish and Game Commission with the Water Supply Commission, the Forest Purchasing Board and the Black River Power Commission. Fleming participated as a delegate to the Democratic National Conventions in 1912, 1920 and 1924 . He was mayor of Troy, New York, in 1920 and 1921. He was elected New York State Comptroller in the 1922 election, but lost to Republican Vincent B. Murphy when he ran for re-election in 1924 . He held the post from 1923 to 1924.
