William Sohmer

William Sohmer (born May 26, 1852 in Dunningen , Kingdom of Württemberg , † February 2, 1929 in New York City ) was an American politician .

Career

William Sohmer immigrated to the United States with his family in 1858 . They settled in New York , where his older brother Hugo founded Sohmer & Co. in 1872 . His father was a doctor ( physician ) and took care of a good education for his sons. In 1872 William Sohmer entered the insurance business and eventually became President of the Niagara Fire Insurance Company.

Sohmer served in the New York State Assembly for the 10th District ( New York County ) in 1890, 1891, and 1892 . He was then appointed Deputy Tax Commissioner . He suffered a defeat when he ran for the post of sheriff of New York County in 1894 . In 1895 he was elected to the registry of New York County and in 1897 to the clerk in New York County. He sat again in 1904 for the 10th district (New York County) in the New York State Assembly, and in 1907 and 1908 for the 12th district in the New York Senate . In the 1910 election, he was elected a Democrat to the New York State Comptroller . He was re-elected in 1912 by the Democrats and the Independence League . He suffered a defeat when he ran for re-election in 1914. In 1912 he took part as a delegate to the Democratic National Convention in Baltimore ( Maryland ). From 1910 he was Treasurer of Tammany Hall .
