history

The weaving mill was founded in 1850 by Heinrich Schilbach (1828–1905) for the "woolen manufacture" . His sons Robert, Heinrich jun. (1863–1914), Friedrich (1867–1915) and Carl (1868–1934) later joined the company as Compagnons , the company became Schilbach & Comp. or Schilbach & Co. added.

Factory and residential buildings

The extensive, representative factory was located on the property at Reichenbacher Straße 103 in the Aubachtal in Greiz, directly on the back of the Aubach, which gave the district its name. After the bankruptcy, the buildings were used as the NSKK's motorsport school. After the war, the main building was converted into apartments (“residential courtyard”). Halls and open spaces were used by motor vehicles, other companies as warehouses, etc. Then the VEB Kunststoffwerk Greiz established itself as part of the VEB Cowaplast Coswig and produced foils, artificial leather and the like. The entire factory was placed under monument protection. Nevertheless, all shed roof halls and ancillary buildings were demolished in 2015, thus destroying the complex, which had been completely preserved from 1878/1884.

The residence of Heinrich Schilbach sen. was first located in Greiz in the building Carolinenstraße 54. Later (1882) one of the most representative villas in Greiz was built on the property at Carolinenstraße 12 according to plans by the Leipzig architect Hans Enger . This villa was given in the Greiz address book for 1892 as the residence of three male adult members of the family, Heinrich Schilbach (senior), Heinrich Schilbach (jun.) And Carl Schilbach. In 1937 the villa was still the residence of Heinrich Schilbach, who was probably a grandson of the company's founder. The villa is a listed building.

Carl Schilbach (1868–1934) lived in Villa Gartenweg 2a, which was built in 1910 according to plans by the architect Ernst Steiner. This villa is also a listed building.

The residence of Robert Schilbach (1862-1919) was in 1892 in the house Oststraße 32a (today: Rudolf-Breitscheid-Straße).

present

The factory buildings were almost completely preserved except for the chimney and boiler house. The main building has been renovated and now houses social housing. The weaving hall and the ancillary buildings were left to decay and demolished in 2015, which destroyed one of the last completely preserved historical textile factory ensembles in Greiz.

Heinrich Schilbach Sr.'s villa, used as a kindergarten during the GDR era, stood empty for years after 1990 and has since found new owners.

Carl Schilbach's villa was first used by the Sparkasse Gera-Greiz and then restored; today it houses a medical center.
