James A. Roberts

James Arthur Roberts (born March 8, 1847 in Waterboro , Maine , † November 19, 1922 in New York City ) was an American soldier, lawyer and politician ( Republican Party ).

Career

James Arthur Roberts, son of Alma and Jeremiah Roberts, was born in York County during the Mexican-American War . Nothing is known about his youth. During the Civil War he enlisted as a private in the 7th Maine Battery. In the following years he fought in the siege of Petersburg and later took part in the campaign which ended with the surrender of General Robert E. Lee in Appomattox Court House . He graduated from Bowdoin College in 1870 . He then studied law in Buffalo, New York, and then began practicing as a lawyer there after receiving his license. On June 1, 1871, he married Minnie Pineo and later Martha Dresser. Roberts was Secretary of the Depew Improvement Company, Vice President of the Bellevue and Lancaster Railway Company, and Secretary of the Bellevue Land Company. He sat in the New York State Assembly in 1879 for the 3rd District ( Erie County ) and in 1880 for the 4th District (Erie County) . He was elected New York State Comptroller in the 1893 election and was re-elected in 1895 - a post he held from 1894 to 1898. Roberts participated in 1900 as a substitute ( alternate delegate ) in the Republican National Convention . He died in New York City in 1922 and was buried in Forest Lawn Cemetery (Buffalo).
