Harry D. Yates

Harry Douglas Yates (born July 21, 1903 in Buffalo , New York , † October 9, 1996 in Menands , New York) was an American officer , banker and politician .

Career

Nothing is known about Harry Douglas Yates' youth. He graduated from Hamilton College in 1925 with a Bachelor of Science degree . On April 27, 1932, the New York State Comptroller Morris S. Tremaine appointed him First Deputy Comptroller. After the death of Tremaine on October 12, 1941 acted Yates one week as Comptroller to the long New York Governor Herbert H. Lehman Joseph V. O'Leary from the American Labor Party appointed as the new New York State Comptroller to the vacancy to to fill. Yates continued to work under O'Leary as First Deputy Comptroller until November 1942. At that point, he resigned to join the US Army and assist in the United States' war effort during World War II . He was assigned to the Adjutant General's Corps, based in Washington, DC . While on vacation, he married Anita Pohndorff (1914-1991) from Saratoga (New York). He left the army with the rank of captain and then returned to Albany, New York. There he managed the Dutch Village Apartments in Menands (New York) and became President of the Albany Home Savings Bank. He was a trustee of Hamilton College, the Albany Institute of History & Art, and Siena College . He received a Doctor of Humane Letters from Siena College in 1972 and the Distinguished Service Award from the Episcopal Bishop of Albany in 1973.
