Samuel Jones (born July 26, 1734 in Oyster Bay , Queens , Province of New York , † November 21, 1819 ) was an American lawyer and politician .

Career

Samuel Jones, son of Phoebe Jackson (1715–1800) and William Jones (1708–1779), was born in Oyster Bay during the reign of King George II . Nothing is known about his youth. At one point he studied law and began practicing as a lawyer after receiving his license. He served Queens in the New York State Assembly from 1786 and 1790 . During this time he was elected to the Continental Congress in 1788 , but did not take part in the session . He then sat in the New York Senate from 1791 to 1799 . On February 17, 1797, the office of New York State Comptrollers was created by the New York State Legislature . Jones was appointed first Comptroller on March 15 by the Council of Appointments - a post he held until 1800.

He was married to Cornelia Haring. The couple had a son named Samuel Jones who was a Chancellor.
