Robert Denniston (born October 15, 1800 in Blooming Grove , New York , † December 2, 1867 there ) was an American lawyer and politician .

Career

Robert Denniston, son of Prudence Morrison and James Denniston (around 1770-1825), was born in 1800 in Orange County . His youth was overshadowed by the British-American War . At some point he studied law and was admitted to the bar. On September 24, 1823 he married Julianna Howell († 1825). After her death he married Mary Scott. The couple had five sons and six daughters. He served as an officer in the New York State Militia and was a justice of the peace at Blooming Grove. The Governor of New York William L. Marcy appointed him a judge on the Court of Common Pleas in Orange County.

At that time he was a member of the Democratic Party . He served in the New York State Assembly for Orange County in 1835, 1839 and 1840 and in the New York Senate from 1841 to 1847 (64th to 70th  New York State Legislature ). During his tenure in the New York Senate, he chaired the Committee on Canals. In the following years he joined the Republican Party . He ran for the post of New York State Comptroller in 1857 , but suffered a defeat to Democrat Sanford E. Church . In 1859 he ran again for the post of New York State Comptroller and won a victory. He held the post from 1860 to 1861. The following years were overshadowed by the civil war.
