Asher P. Nichols

Asher P. Nichols (* 1815 in Whiting , Vermont , † May 30, 1880 in Clinton , New York ) was an American lawyer and politician .

Career

The Nichols family moved to Rushville, New York when he was young. Nothing more is known about his youth. He graduated from Springville Academy at the age of about 18 . He then moved to Canandaigua, New York, to work as a clerk in the office of Judge George W. Clinton , son of New York Governor DeWitt Clinton . In 1836 they both moved to Buffalo, New York, where both became the city's first lawyers. Nichols graduated from law school, was admitted to the bar, and became Clinton's partner.

Although he was a staunch Democrat , he was not involved in politics until 1867. At that point he accepted the New York Senate nomination and won the election by a large majority. He served in the New York Senate for the 31st District in 1868 and 1869.

In June 1870, he was appointed New York State Comptroller to fill the vacancy created by the resignation of William Fitch Allen , who was elected Judge on the New York Cout of Appeals . In November 1870 he was elected New York State Comptroller for the remainder of William Fitch Allen's tenure. In his re-election in 1871, he suffered a defeat to the Republican Nelson K. Hopkins .

Nichols died of a stroke in a friend's house in Clinton in 1880 and was buried in the Rochester, New York cemetery.
