Thomas Hillhouse

Thomas Hillhouse (born March 10, 1817 in Albany County , New York , † July 31, 1897 in Yonkers , New York) was an American farmer, banker and politician . The Congressman and US Senator James Hillhouse was his uncle.

Career

Thomas Hillhouse, son of Thomas Hillhouse († 1835), was born in 1817 on a farm in Albany County and lived there until 1851. Nothing is known about his career at that time. This period was overshadowed by the economic crisis of 1837 and the subsequent Mexican-American War . Hill House then moved to Geneva ( Ontario County ). He married Harriet Prouty († 1903). The couple had a son named Thomas Griswold Hillhouse († 1910).

He served in the New York Senate for the 26th District in 1860 and 1861 . During the Civil War , he served as Adjutant General in the New York State Militia under New York Governor Edwin D. Morgan from 1861 to late 1862 . The militia fought alongside the Union Army .

In elections in 1865, he became a Republican to the New York State Comptroller chosen - a post he held 1866-1867. In his re-election in 1867 he suffered a defeat.

He was then Assistant Treasurer of the United States until his resignation in 1881 . He then was President of the Metropolitan Trust Company in New York City .
