Geneva is a city in the US state of New York . It is in Ontario County . According to the 2010 census, the population was 13,261. The name of the city comes from the English word "Geneva" for the Swiss city of Geneva .
history
Originally the settlement Kanadasaga of the Seneca Indian people, who belong to the Iroquois, existed here . The British built a fortification here against the French and later against the Americans. After the settlement was destroyed by the Sullivan expedition in 1779, the settlement was initially abandoned, but was repopulated by Europeans around 1793.
Demographics
According to the 2000 census, 13,617 people lived here; 5,014 households and 2,933 families were counted. The population density was 1,234 inhabitants per km². 5,564 residential units were recorded. The racial the population was composed of 81.52% White, 10.22% African American, 0.25% Native American, 1.23% Asian, 0.05% Pacific Islander, and 3.39% other ethnic groups; 3.34% said they came from several ethnic groups. 8.50% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Children or adolescents also lived in 29.5% of households; 38.6% were made up of a married couple, 15.9% were single mothers, and 41.5% were non-families. 34.1% were single households and 14.8% had someone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.35, the average family size 3.03 people.
The population was distributed among 23.2% under 18 years of age, 18.9% between 18 and 24 years of age, 24.3% between 25 and 44 years of age, 18.1% between 45 and 64 years of age and 15.5% between 65 and over or older. The mean age ( median ) was 32 years. For every 100 females there were 87.4 males, and for every 100 females aged 18 and over there were 84.5 males.
The median income for a household (median) was 31 600 US $ , and the median income for a family $ 41,224. Males had a median income of $ 31,315 versus $ 23,054 for females. The per capita income was $ 15,609. 13.7% of families and 17.5% of the population lived below the poverty line, including 27.2% of the population under the age of 18 and 7.8% of the population aged 65 or over.
