Live and act

Léveillé studied medicine at the University of Paris and received his doctorate in 1824. med. In his work Recherches sur l ' hymenium de champignon he described the basidia of the mushroom for the first time. In 1837, in Sur le hymenium des champignons, he postulated that the mushrooms form their spores in the basidia and the sac fungi theirs in the asci . He also discovered the fact that fungal hyphae form the sclerotia (in Mémoire sur le genere Sclerotium - 1843). In this work he also described the genus Sclerotium as an imperfect clan. In 1846 he created a system of fungi based on microscopic criteria (in: Considérations mycologiques, suivies d'une nouvelle classification des champignons ) and in which he compared the Basidiomycetes with the Ascomycetes based on the fruiting bodies.

Léveillé has described several species and genera, including:

  • Hymenochaete Lév.
  • Lachnocladium Lév. emend. Corner
  • Microsphaera Lev.
  • Phyllactinia Lév.
  • Podosphaera G. Kunze: Lév.
  • Sphaerotheca Lév.
  • Uncinula Lev.

The mushroom genera Leveillea Fr. and Leveillella Theiss are named after Léveillé . & Syd. , Leveillina Theiss. & Syd. , Leveillula G.Arnaud and Leveillinopsis F.Stevens .
