Phil Flanigan

Phil Flanigan (born June 28, 1956 in Geneva (New York) ) is an American jazz musician ( double bass , also cello , guitar ).

Live and act

Flanigan started out playing the piano, trombone and guitar before switching to the double bass. He studied double bass at the Eastman School of Music with Oscar Zimmerman, then at the New England Conservatory . During this time he played on weekends with jazz bands in Providence and got to know the jazz musicians Scott Hamilton and Chris Flory in 1976 . For a short time in 1979 he was a member of the Widespread Depression Orchestra ; after moving to New York City, he worked as a freelance musician from the 1980s. He performed at Eddie Condon 's Club and played a. a. with Benny Goodman , Scott Hamilton,Bob Wilber , Eiji Kitamura , Butch Miles and Warren Vaché , heard on the trio album Midtown Jazz (Concord Jazz 1982), with Vaché and John Bunch

Flanigan toured Europe and Japan with the Scott Hamilton Quintet, recorded for Concord Jazz and had the opportunity to perform at Eddie Condon's with guest soloists such as Illinois Jacquet , Jimmy Rowles , Tommy Flanagan and Ruby Braff . During this time he also worked with Roy Eldridge (with whom he appeared in Jimmy Ryan’s Club ) and at Condon’s as a member of the house band with Ed Polcer , Jack Maheu , Connie Kay and Vic Dickenson . During his time in New York City, he also played with swing and bop veterans such as Jo Jones , Tiny Grimes , Johnny Griffin , Hank Jones and Sonny Greer . Since 1989 he has lived in Fort Lauderdale , Florida; there he worked a. a. with Eddie Higgins , Dr. Lonnie Smith , Ira Sullivan and Allan Vaché . The album New York Toast (Philophile) was created under his own name in 1994 , recorded in a quartet with Todd Delgiudice, Roger Wilder and Duffy Jackson . In the field of jazz he was involved in 108 recording sessions between 1977 and 2011, apart from the named ones with Harry Allen , John Allred , Rosemary Clooney , Johnny Griffin, Kenny Davern , Howard Alden , George Masso , Jerry Jerome , Michiko Ogawa , Brian Ogilvie , John Sheridan / Rebecca Kilgore and with Ralph Sutton / Johnny Varro . He plays in the quartet The Big Four , dedicated to the music of Muggsy Spanier and Sidney Bechet .
