Butch Miles

Butch Miles (born July 4, 1944 in Ironton , Ohio ) is an American jazz drummer.

Life

Butch Miles grew up in West Virginia , took an interest in drums at the age of 14, and then took lessons from Frank Thompson in Charleston . At first he played in dance bands; After several years of engagement with Iris Bell , his jazz career began in 1971 in Mel Tormé's band . In addition to frequent engagements for Count Basie's big band since 1975, he has accompanied a wide range of jazz musicians from Wild Bill Davison to Gerry Mulligan . In 1980 he accompanied the singer Tony Bennett . His great role model was Sonny Payne from the Count Basie Orchestra . He plays in the tradition of swing drummers like Jo Jones or Gus Johnson .
