Jack Maheu

Jack Maheu (born May 1, 1930 in Troy (New York) , † August 27, 2013 in Ithaca ) was an American clarinetist (also xylophone ) and band leader of Dixieland Jazz .

Live and act

Maheu grew up in Plattsburgh ; after graduation, he first studied commercial art for two years at the Pratt Art Institute in Brooklyn before moving to Syracuse University , where he studied clarinet. In 1951 he co-founded the Dixieland band Salt City Five , which later became the Salt City Six . The combo consisted mostly of members of the Marching Band of Syracuse University. In 1954 recordings were made for Jubilee Records . In 1957 Maheu left the band and became a member of the Dukes of Dixieland , with whom he recorded eight albums and contributed to arrangements. In 1959 he left the Dukes and founded his own formation that played in the Preview Lounge in Chicago, in which trombonist George Brunis also made a guest appearance . In 1961 he was with Will Alger co-leader of the reformed Salt City Six , which went on tour with Wild Bill Davison in 1962 . In 1968 the group became house band at the Gallery in Burlington, Vermont , a club that Maheu ran. 1979 Maheu played in the house band of Eddie Condon's jazz club in Manhattan and took part in 1980 on Condon's album Hot Lunch (with Pee Wee Erwin ). Then he worked for Eddy Davis . In 1988 he moved to Marco Island, Florida, where he co-founded the Paradise Jazz Band . In 1990 he moved to New Orleans, toured with Al Hirt and had engagements at the Fairmont Hotel , Bourbon Street clubs and Mississippi steamers. He founded the Fire in the Pet Shop Callithumpian Jazz Band and remained active as a musician until 2006. His last album was My Inspiration , released by Jazzology.

In the field of jazz he was involved in 73 recording sessions between 1954 and 2004, apart from the named ones with Art Hodes , Maxine Sullivan , Wallace Davenport , Doc Evans , Tom Saunders , Don Ewell , Leon Redbone , Howard Alden , Doc Cheatham , Nicholas Payton and most recently In 2004 with Bob French's Original Tuxedo Jazz Band : Maheu, whose career spanned over fifty years, suffered a stroke in 2006 , lived in a nursing home in Ithaca and died there in late August 2013 at the age of 83.
