Don Ewell (born November 14, 1916 in Baltimore , Maryland , † August 9, 1983 in Fort Lauderdale , Florida) was an American stride pianist and band leader of Dixieland Jazz .
Don Ewell was educated at the Peabody Conservatory. He began his career in the Baltimore area in the mid-1930s, continuing the tradition of New Orleans jazz from Jelly Roll Morton . After World War II, he worked with Sidney Bechet , Doc Evans , Kid Ory , George Lewis , George Brunis , Muggsy Spanier, and Bunk Johnson .
From 1956 to 1962 Ewell was a leading member of Jack Teagarden's band . After Teagarden's death, Ewell toured Europe several times and had a band with Darnell Howard , Minor Hall and Pops Foster . He then moved to New Orleans and played in clubs and hotels there.
