Tom Saunders

Thomas William "Tom" Saunders (born April 21, 1938 in Detroit , † February 13, 2010 in Grosse Pointe Park ) was an American musician ( cornet , vocals ) and band leader of Dixieland Jazz .

Live and act

Saunders was part of the Detroit hot jazz scene for over 40 years ; best known as the head of the Detroit Jazz All-Stars . He played cornet when he was seven; at the age of nine he already appeared in his brother's band and at the age of 13 he had his first own formation. After completing his military service in the Navy, Saunders went on tour with Pee Wee Hunt and finally with his idol Wild Bill Davison , whose game soon influenced his own style; In 1965 he participated in Davison's album Surfside Jazzz . In the 1960s and 1970s he formed The Surfside Six and played in venues such as the Surfside Lounge and Dearborn Town House . In the 1980s he performed as a soloist with his own bands at jazz festivals and jazz parties. In the 1990s, he formed the Wild Bill Davison Legacy Band , which included Bill Allred , Johnny Varro , Chuck Hedges , Danny Moss , Marty Grosz , Isla Eckinger, and Butch Miles .

Saunders also took part in the recordings of Cleff Leeman and Jeanie Lambert and played in the Alex Welsh Tribute Jazz Band in England . In 2002 he was awarded the Sacramento Jazz Jubilee Emperor . The cornetist should not be confused with his nephew, the New Orleans tubist / bassist of the same name.
