Original Tuxedo Jazz Band

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Tuxedo Brass Band is one of Papa Celestin founded and led until his death in jazz band in New Orleans . In the 1920s they played in different outfits in upscale night clubs and as a Tuxedo Brass Band as a typical New Orleans brass band . The Original Tuxedo Jazz Band continued to exist after Papa Celestin's death.

Founded in 1910 by Papa Celestin , it played in the Tuxedo Dance Hall in the Storyville entertainment district of New Orleans (North Franklin Street). Members were George Filhé (trombone), Peter Bocage (violin), Lorenzo Tio clarinet, T. Brouchard (bass), Manuel Manetta on piano and Louis Cottrell senior on drums. They kept the Tuxedo name even when the dance hall was closed in 1913 after a shootout in which the owner died, and continued to exist after the Storyville entertainment district closed in 1917. In a way, the Tuxedo Brass Band was even founded in 1917 when Manuel Perez temporarily disbanded his Onward Brass Band , from which musicians switched to the Tuxedo Brass Band. In 1921 and 1922 Louis Armstrong played in the brass band. Other members were Alphonse Picou , Mutt Carey , Jimmie Noone , Johnny Dodds , Zutty Singleton , Lorenzo Tio, Peter Bocage and Willie Pajeaud .

In the 1920s, the brass band developed into the Original Tuxedo Jazz Band , whose members performed in tuxedos ( tuxedos ) and which were very popular in New Orleans' upper class in the 1920s. In addition to this dance band, the Original Tuxedo Jazz Orchestra, Papa Celestin still had his brass band in the 1920s. In 1925 they recorded for Okeh Records . Soon afterwards there was a dispute between Celestin and the co-leader William "Bebé" Ridgley (1882-1961) and both founded their own bands under this name, which competed until Ridgley had to give up in 1936 for health reasons.

After Celestin's death in 1954, the trombonist Eddie Pierson took over the band and in 1958 the banjo player Papa French took over at Celestin's request . After his death in 1977 his son, drummer Bob French took over the line, and after his death in 2011 Gerald French, drummer and nephew of Bob French.

They are not to be confused with the Young Tuxedo Brass Band founded in 1938 or with the German Tuxedo Jazz Band .
