Louis Cottrell senior

Louis Cottrell Senior (born December 25, 1878 in New Orleans , † October 17, 1927 ibid) was an American drummer of New Orleans jazz . He introduced the vortex game to jazz and had a significant influence on other New Orleans drummers and the nickname Old Man Cottrell . His students included Baby Dodds , Cie Frazier , Freddie Kohlman , Alfred Williams , Louis Barbarin, and Paul Barbarin .

Cottrell learned to read music from John Cornfelt, who was the same age in 1891. He played in the Olympia Orchestra in New Orleans from 1900 to 1915 and in the band of John Robichaux until 1909 . From 1916 to 1918 he played in the band of Manuel Perez in Chicago and then until his death in the band of Armand Piron in New Orleans, with whom he also recorded records between 1923 and 1925.

He was the father of clarinetist Louis Cottrell junior and great-grandfather of jazz drummer Louis Cottrell from New Orleans.
