Seneca Falls is a town in Seneca County , New York , United States . According to the 2010 census, the city had a population of 9040 and a population density of 144.2 inhabitants per km².

The Town of Seneca Falls has a district that is also called Seneca Falls . The city and the district are located east of Geneva (New York) in the northern part of the Finger Lakes District .

history

The region used to belong to the Cayuga , who were evangelized by Jesuits during the 17th century . The Cayuga villages were attacked and destroyed in 1779 during the Sullivan expedition in retaliation for the looting and killing of settlers.

The region became part of a settlement area designated for veterans of the American Liberation War as part of the Central New York Military Tract . Part of today's city at the northern end of Lake Cayuga was reserved for members of the Cayuga who returned after the war.

In 1818 the construction of a canal between Seneca Lake and Cayuga Lake was completed, which was further connected to the Erie Canal in 1828 .

The city was founded in 1829 as part of the city of Junius . Seneca Falls parish was registered as a hamlet in 1831.

In July 1848, on the initiative of Elizabeth Cady-Stanton and Lucretia Mott, the Seneca Falls Convention , the first women's rights congress in the USA, took place here.

The two locations Seneca Falls and Bedford Hills served as a template for the fictional city of Bedford Falls in the famous film Isn't Life Beautiful? directed by Frank Capra in 1946 ( It's a Wonderful Life ) with James Stewart and Donna Reed .

According to the United States Census Bureau , the city has an area of ​​71.0 km² (27.4 mi² ). 62.8 km² (24.2 mi²) of this is land area and 8.3 km² (3.2 mi²) or (11.63%) is water area.

The eastern city limits are partially formed by Cayuga Lake . The Seneca River (New York) and the Cayuga-Seneca Canal flow through the city. The aim is to create a history trail along the historical water canal. The eastern part of the city belongs to the Montezuma Marsh , an extensive wetland in the northern area of ​​Cayuga Lake.

US Highway 20 (US-20), which coincides with New York State Route 5 (NY-5), forms an east-west corridor through the city. New York State Route 89 is a north-south connection on the shores of Lake Seneca.
