Montezuma National Wildlife Refuge

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Montezuma National Wildlife Refuge is a nature reserve owned by the United States Fish and Wildlife Service that includes part of the Montezuma Wetland on the north shore of Cayuga Lake . The reserve is located between the cities of Rochester and Syracuse, New York (5 miles east of Seneca Falls and 10 miles west of Auburn ) and is in areas of the counties of Seneca , Cayuga and Wayne .

The Montezuma Marshland became a National Natural Landmark in May 1973 . This includes an area that is among the most natural, wooded wetlands in New York.

The history

The Finger Lakes Region was formed by melting glaciers during the last ice age, more than a thousand years ago. The north and south ends of the lakes gradually became marshland. The first inhabitants of the region were the Algonquin Indians, later the Cayugas came from the Iroquois nation. The name Montezuma was first used in 1806 when Peter Clark named his villa Montezuma , after the palace of the Aztec ruler Montezuma in Mexico City . This is how the marshland, the place and the nature reserve got this name.

The nature reserve today

The currently 28 km 2 area consists mainly of swamps, ponds and canals and is a popular stopover for migratory birds. Supporters of the nature reserve hope that the size can be increased by buying adjacent areas.

The New York State Thruway runs through the northern edge of the nature reserve. You can get a better view of the nature park from a 6 km long road south of the Thruway, which starts at the visitor center.

There is also a zone in the nature reserve where bald eagles have nested in recent years.
