The Cayuga Lake is a lake in the USA .

It belongs to the Finger Lakes group of lakes and is located in Cayuga County in the US state of New York . The lake has an average width of 2.8 km. Its widest point is 5 km. The lake is up to 132 meters deep and 116.4  m above sea level. M. The lake area is 169 km². The catchment area of Cayuga Lake covers 2010 km².

The lake was created as a moraine lake at the end of the last ice age .

There is a small island in the lake near Union Springs called Frontenac Island , which is one of only two islands in the Finger Lakes .

The city of Ithaca with Cornell University is located at the southern end of Cayuga Lake. The university's official song, Far Above Cayuga's Waters , celebrates the location on the lake.

The water level is regulated by a sluice at the northern end of the lake.

The lake is connected to the Erie Canal by the Cayuga-Seneca Canal , and thus in connection with Lake Ontario . In addition, it is connected to the west of Seneca Lake by the Cayuga-Seneca Canal . Before the onset of winter, the water level of the lake is reduced to a minimum in order to create retention space for the floods that occur in spring.

On the west bank of the lake is the Taughannock Falls , part of the Taughannock Falls State Park located here .

The northern area of ​​the lake is characterized by shallow alluvial land and silt , and an important stopover point for migratory birds . This is exactly where the Montezuma National Wildlife Refuge is located, a nature and bird sanctuary that is managed and supervised by the United States Fish and Wildlife Service .

The southern area is also shallow and the surface of the lake often freezes over during the winter months.
