At 173 km², Seneca Lake is the largest of the Finger Lakes in the US state of New York and, at 188 m, the deepest lake completely located in this state ( Lake Ontario is deeper, but its north shore is in Canada ). It is at an altitude of 135 m . It was formed as a moraine lake at the end of the last ice age .
The lake is known as the " Arctic Char Capital " and is the venue for the National Lake Trout Derby. Because of its depth, Seneca Lake was used for submarine testing purposes.
Seneca Lake is 61 km long, making it the second longest of the Finger Lakes. The two main tributaries are Catharine Creek at the southern end of the lake and the outflow from Keuka Lake . The lake is also fed by underground springs (29,520 m³ / min). These are responsible for the continuous circulation of the lake water and thus prevent the lake surface from freezing in winter.

The name of the lake comes from the Seneca Indian tribe . At the northern end of Seneca Lake is the small town of Geneva . At the southern end of the lake is the place Watkins Glen .
Due to the mild macroclimate on the lake, wine is grown on its banks . In Seneca Lake AVA -Weinbaugebiet there are more than 50 wineries.
From 1900 to 1923 the lake was reached by the Elmira and Seneca Lake Railway .
