The Hemlock Lake is one of the smaller lakes in the Finger Lakes in the US state of New York . It extends in the area of Livingston County , south of Rochester . Part of it extends to Ontario County . Hemlock is a translation of the Onodowohga word O-neh-da Te-car-ne-o-di .

geography

Hemlock Lake is 7 mi (11 km) long and 0.5 mi (800 m) wide almost everywhere. It extends from north to south, has an area of 1,800 acres (7.3 km²), a maximum depth of 91 ft (28 m) and an average depth of 45 ft (14 m). The water level is at a height of 276 m above sea level . it serves as a drinking water reservoir for Rochester, so a bank development is subject to approval and there are size restrictions for boats and outboard motors .

A special feature of the lake is the salmon population . Due to the remote location, the salmon cannot migrate and spend their entire lives in the lake. There are also rainbow trout , trout , lake trout , smallmouth bass , largemouth bass , rock bass , chain pike , catfish , yellow perch , walleye and dead-arm bluegill . At the northern end of the lake, between State Highway 15A (Bald Hill Road) and the Hemlock Outlet, is Hemlock Lake Park . The highest peaks in the area are the Bald hill with 563 m height and the Marrowback Hill with 594 m height. To the south the lake goes over into the Springwater Valley .

history

The Seneca used the lake and the areas around the southern end of the lake for hunting and fishing until the 1770s. In September 1779, General John Sullivan and his units drove the Indians out as part of the Sullivan expedition .

The first settlers arrived in Hemlock Lake in the 1790s. Most of them were engaged in logging and built their lodgings as log houses by the drain at the northern end of the lake. Due to the way it was built, the settlement was known at times under the name Slab City . The lake was used for rafting in summer and for transporting timber on the ice in winter.

Over time, the settlement developed into a village with more than a hundred huts and five hotels. There were five large ships that sailed the lake around 1800, including the steamboat The Seth Green . The lake became a popular summer getaway destination for affluent citizens especially from Rochester.

In 1852, the City of Rochester decided to build a 16-mile (26 km) pipeline after polluted water caused a serious epidemic. In 1876 the water pipe was inaugurated. To improve the water quality, the city acquired the land around Hemlock Lake and neighboring Canadice Lake ; the huts, hotels and farms were demolished in 1895. Owners who refused to sell were expropriated. The city acquired 5000 acres (10 km²) of land, with a forested area of 3900 acres (16 km²).

In 2010, the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) acquired the Hemlock and Canadice Lake tracts from the City of Rochester for $ 13.7 million . The state pledged to keep the lakes as wilderness forever. Access to the lakes is permitted and even subsidized, but boats are limited to 17 ft (5.2 m) in length and outboard motors are limited to 10 hp .
