High Falls in Rochester

The Genesee River is a 150 miles long river in the US states of New York and Pennsylvania of the United States of America .

It flows into Lake Ontario near Rochester . The river was called the "river of many falls" by the Seneca , an Indian tribe that used to live in the area. Its current name comes from the Iroquois language and means "beautiful valley".

The middle section of the river crosses Letchworth State Park in a gorge up to 200 m deep . In its southern part, which is also called the Grand Canyon of the East , there are three waterfalls, the Upper , Middle and Lower Falls . In Rochester, the Erie Canal used to cross the Genesee River by means of an aqueduct . Today this section of the canal is closed. The newer New York State Barge Canal now crosses the river south of Rochester. From Rochester to Lake Ontario, the Genesee River has a gradient of around 100 m. Here is the beautiful 29 m high High Falls waterfall, and 1.5 km downstream the 20 m high Lower Falls .
